Event Description :

Tamu Samaj Victoria celebrated its 4th “Tamu Culture Day” on the 29th of September 2019 at Harold Stevens Atheletic Track, Coburg. Since last 3 years, it has been organized with aim to preserve and promote Tamu culture, and Cultural identity of Tamu community in Victoria. It is also an excellent opportunity to pass some of Tamu culture and traditions from one generation to next generation. We have noted that the number of youths and young generation is increasing every year. We believe that our young generation will slowly understand the importance of our Tamu culture and identity. Most of Tamu attendees are currently residing across greater Melbourne region. Almost 150 young and old Tamus came to the event, majority of all age-groups were wearing Tamu cultural attire and ornaments such as Bhangra and Dhaka Topi by males, and Ghalek, Gunyo-Cholo, Patuka and Piru mala by females.

The event started with Buddha Puja by lighting candles and praying in front of Buddha statue. Puja was conducted by Sange Lama Guru by explaining the process of puja and its importance. After 30 minutes of puja, there was a welcome speech by TSV President Mr. Pahalman Gurung. He also explained about Tamu dress and some other traditional household items. Next Dr Arun Gurung gave an update about the TSV Cultural Centre project.

Thereafter the main highlight of the event was the presentation from Dr. Mohan Gurung. He gave a general overview on “Culture” by showing slide shows and explaining its importance in our lives. He elaborated on how every culture is developed to fulfill the human needs and the role of Tamu Culture in order to maintain social integration and social harmony in the society. He emphasized on the vital role that culture plays to shape up as an individual and their thought process. According to Dr. Mohan, living in the country like Australia now where multi-ccultural diversity is celebrated should be cherished by all of us.

Furthermore, Mr. Mabi Gurung and Mr. Rajan Gurung presented a very entertaining as well as informative Tamu language conversation in a dramatic way. It was a golden opportunity to listen to a Tamu conversation as this happens rarely in a everyday life in Australia. The conversation included some useful Tamu words. The main purpose of this part was to keep our culture and history alive by not losing rich unique Tamu language. Moreover, the aim was also to provide a basic idea about Tamu language especially those people who were born and grown up abroad.

One fun activity where children get to enjoy and at the same time learn about Tamu culture is drawing competition. This year the drawing photo was a traditional Tamu Village in Nepal Mountains. In sports, Thelo Falne” for men, “Ghaito Futaune” for women and “Musical Chair” for kids were held.

Tamus have a rich tradition of music and dance culture. Two dances were shown during the program in order to continue the dance tradition as well as to entertain the attendees.

On behalf of TSV Aama Group, Mrs. Anita Gurung led the main organizing task of catering delicious food such as curry, rice, pickle, meat, selroti etc. for the event. Those food items were prepared by volunteers/attendees at home.

Around 4pm, the program concluded with prize and certificate distribution. Acknowledgment speech from Food/drinks coordinator Mrs. Anita Gurung and finally concluding remarks from Mr Pahalman Gurung were given.

There is a long list of volunteers got involved in the planning, preparation, execution and post-event activities. It was a family event, therefore TSV committee tried to get all the age groups – from young to old – involved in available volunteer opportunities. In Puja activities, Mr Rajan Gurung and Sange Lama; Sound and projector setup, advisor Mr Ashok Gurung; Kids activities, Ms Inasha and Ishita Gurung; Thelo Falne, Hari Gurung; Ghaito Futaune, Ms Mohini Gurung; Musical Chair, Inasha Gurung and TSV volunteers; Food/drinks, all volunteers led by Aama Toli; Photography, Mr. Sachin Gurung, Membership/finance, Public officer Inder Singh Gurung and Treasurers Amrit Gurung and Dipu Gurung; MCs, Mr Prabin Gurung, Mr. Reewaj Gurung and Ms Inasha Gurung. Many other volunteers worked behind the scene and extended help to make the event a memorable one. Without a collective great effort, it would not have been this successful.

Finally special thanks go to all the attendees many of whom despite their work and other commitment, came to participate, learn and share one or two things about Tamu culture. That itself made the program a worthwhile and important placeholder in the Tamu Samaj Victoria history page.

As always, please send your feedback or suggestions to the executive committee for consideration to make the day even better next year. Thank you.
